"We'll never get to him like this! We need more power. We need to go to 'hypercrate'."

The Crate Bus was a flying vehicle used by the Croteam Heads. It collided with the SSS Centerprice and was (presumably) responsible for crashing the ship in the first place.

Overview[]

The crate bus was a "vehicle" made from wooden crates which have the Serious Sam logo on it. The bus was, unusually, capable of flying, despite lacking wings or a propeller found in aircraft. The crate bus was powered by an engine, which functioned as a propulsion system.[1] The bus had a total of 24 seats. It seemed to have two parts; the first part has 7 seats on one side and the other has one 5. The crates were joined together with chains so they wouldn't detach.

The crate bus was capable of a turbo boost called "hypercrate", which could drastically increase the speed of the vehicle.

Crate bus flying towards Sam

The crate bus in "hypercrate" mode, shortly before colliding with the SSS Centerprice.

After Sam flies off to Sirius in the SSS Centerprice, the Bigheads on their crate bus take flight to follow Sam on his journey. When the spaceship gains speed and they can't catch up, they decide to activate "hypercrate". Suddenly, the brake of the crate bus breaks and they lose control, colliding with the ship and killing the crew on impact. The damage caused by the crate bus forces the SSS Centerprice to fall back into Earth's atmosphere, and it crash-lands near Palenque in Mexico.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Sam's quote upon finding the secret destroyed crate bus in The Second Encounter's Sierra de Chiapas is a play-on from the Interview with Old Man Murray with Croteam's Roman Ribarić where Murray expresses his hatred towards the abundance of crates in first-person shooters at the time and jokes how Croteam did not understand what the word crate meant.[2]
  • Another vehicle based on crates appears as a secret in Sacred Yards. Unlike the crate bus, though, it has wheels and is intended to be used on the ground.
  • The destroyed wreckage of the crate bus can be found in Sierra de Chiapas as a secret, along with some rocket ammo.
