The Scrapjack, or Scrapjack Rocketeer, is an enemy introduced in Serious Sam 3: BFE, with the enemy making further appearances in Serious Sam's Bogus Detour,Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, Serious Sam 4 and Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem. The Scrapjack also appears as a boss in I Hate Running Backwards. They are armed with two rocket launchers, which can make them dangerous enemies.

In its appearances, the Scrapjack replaces the Zumb'ul from Serious Sam: The Second Encounter (except in The Last Hope, where both enemies appear together and share the same role).

Overview[]

Scrapjacks, as they are conveniently named, are low-grade models of Mental's forces, created from crudely stitched-together and assembled body parts of killed soldiers.[1] As Mental's troops are subject to frequent dismemberment, this has made the Scrapjack cheap and easy to produce. The Scrapjack has three selectable heads to choose from, which can exhibit various behaviors. This along with the fact that they carry rocket launchers, can make them a dangerous threat.[1]

Several types of Scrapjacks are known to exist. The most commonly seen variety is called the Scrapjack Rocketeer, which wields two rocket launchers, and a much larger version, known as Raahloom, wields a massive warhammer and a modified SBC Cannon. The Fattie Swallower is the third known variant, and is slightly larger. Unlike the more commonly seen Scrapjacks, the Fattie fires large sawblades instead of rockets and is a much tougher and more formidable opponent.

Application[]

Scrapjacks are deployed into areas where heavy enemy resistance is encountered by Mental's forces. Like Adult Arachnoids, they are often used to support weaker troops and to provide covering fire.

Appearances[]

Scrapjacks are not usually as common as other enemies, and often appear in the later levels of whatever game they appear in. Their main purpose is to give support to the main attacking force and harass the player when they are busy dealing with other enemies.

Serious Sam 3: BFE[]

The first Scrapjack encountered in the game appears in Unearthing the Sun. Five more additional Scrapjacks appear later on the same level. As the player progresses throughout the game, Scrapjacks are encountered more frequently, and are usually present one to few at a time, although there can be more in the final level, The Guardian of Time, with at least a dozen Scrapjacks being seen.

Serious Sam's Bogus Detour[]

In Serious Sam's Bogus Detour, Scrapjacks are encountered much earlier compared to other games, appearing as soon as the second level, though they are more uncommon than before. Scrapjacks are often seen surrounded by groups of weaker enemies.

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope[]

In Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, the player may encounter several Scrapjacks at a time. They are encountered in the mid to late levels of the game.

Serious Sam 4[]

Scrapjacks are now more common than before, with the first one is encountered in the first level of the game, Death from Above, along with a squad of Octanian Gamma Troopers. In the later levels, they occur much more frequently, often in small groups and with hordes of weaker enemies.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]

They first appear in A Smell Of Petroleum Prevails, and then on every level afterwards. They usually appear one at a time or there may be several of them encountered at once. They are more prevalent on Serious difficulty or New Game+.

Behavior and skills[]

Scrapjack in-game

Scrapjacks exhibit different behaviors, and as a result can be dangerous and unpredictable.

Upon noticing the target, the Scrapjack will raise up its arms and fire rockets from its rocket launchers. Its firing patterns are very similar to the Zumb'ul; a Scrapjack will fire a rocket where the player currently is, and another where the Scrapjack's AI believes the where is player's estimated direction is.

With three selectable heads to choose from, the Scrapjack shows different behaviors, from bland attacking to berserking rage.[1] The Scrapjack can enter its "berserk" state when it has been damaged enough. In this phase, the Scrapjack will rapidly fire missiles in a much faster, longer succession just as accurately as regular attacking. Scrapjacks will also fire rockets at the player if there is an obstacle between them and the player, even if the obstacle is indestructible.

The Scrapjack's secondary attack is a powerful melee, which it will only use on the player if they get too close to it. The Scrapjack will lift its arms into the air and it will (depending on the game) deliver a powerful slam to the ground or whack the player with one of its arms. These attacks are very dangerous and deal even more damage than their rockets. When playing on higher difficulty settings, such as Serious difficulty, it is possible for this attack to kill the player in a single hit if they aren't equipped with enough health or armor to survive it.

Unlike most enemies, the Scrapjack can only be executed with a melee attack if it becomes stunned under heavy fire from various weaponry. Not all weapons will stun the Scrapjack, however, though stronger ones such as the A-24 Devastator and the XPML21 Rocket Launcher will always stun the Scrapjack under consistent fire. A special melee attack against the Scrapjack consists of the player ripping off the head of a Scrapjack, which is then followed by a kiss on the resulting trophy the player is left with.

Due to the Scrapjack's large size, heavy weight, and poorly strewn together body parts, they are very slow and sluggish in terms or movement. As a result, their movement is far much slower in comparision to other creatures seen in Mental's Horde. When moving, Scrapjacks can be heard shaking the ground around them with loud thuds coming from their feet. A telltale sign that a Scrapjack is near is by listening to their heavy breathing and grunts. Their size and health allows them to endure multiple direct rocket hits, but they can still be easily dispatched at a distance with concentrated fire from rapid-firing weapons such as the M29 Infantry Assault RifleXL2 Lasergun or XM214-A Minigun. They can be more easily eliminated by detonating a single C-4 charge that has been attached to their torso.

Serious Sam 3: BFE[]

In the Serious Sam Fusion version of Serious Sam 3, on at least Hard difficulty, the Scrapjack has the chance to fire a volley of grenades in a mortar-style fashion. These grenades travel very far and explode a few seconds after touching the ground. Since they deal the same damage as Scrapjack rockets, they can deal a lot of damage to an unsuspecting player, quickly draining them of their health and armor or killing them in just a few hits. On the other hand, Scrapjacks can now be executed with a melee attack without needing to be stunned first and have less health than before, now having only 460 HP.

At close range, the Scrapjack will lift its arms up into the air and slam them down on the player. This attack deal high damage and does even more damage than its rockets.

Serious Sam 4/Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]

The Scrapjack follows the same attack pattern as it does in Serious Sam 3, though it only fire two volleys of rockets compared to before. It also has the same health as in does in the Serious Sam Fusion version of Serious Sam 3. What makes Scrapjacks more dangerous in these titles is that their rockets now deal four times as much damage than in the previous games.

Like other enemies, the Scrapjack will take extra damage when shot in the head and can be stunned after rapidly depleting its health.

If the player gets too close to a Scrapjack, it will whack the player with one of its arms. This attack deals a whopping 50 points of damage, so it is ill-advised to get too close to it.

Tactics[]

General[]

  • Scrapjacks should be considered a medium or high-priority target due to the damage their rockets inflict, especially on harder difficulties. They can also be a major nuisance to the player if they are fighting other enemies.
  • Due to their health, the most ideal weapons to use on a Scrapjack is the A-24 Devastator or XPML21 Rocket Launcher. It only takes several blasts from either weapon to kill one and they do not try to dodge the projectiles due to their slow movement.
  • Groups of Scrapjacks can be easily dealt with multiple C-4 charges if the player has enough to spare. The player has to get quite close to a Scrapjack to place an explosive on his torso, though, which leaves the player vulnerable to taking damage from multiple volleys of rockets.

A skilled player can take down an entire volley of rockets fired by the Scrapjack with rapid-firing weapons such as the assault rifle if they are accurate enough.

Serious Sam 3: BFE[]

  • The rocket launcher is one of the main ways to take Scrapjacks down as they are very slow and do not strafe as an attempt to avoid rockets, unlike Khnums. The Devastator is a recommended option when there are more enemies.
  • The XM214-A Minigun works good against a Scrapjack. If the player doesn't have the minigun, the assault rifle also works, but it depletes ammunition quickly, and takes at least 75 rounds to kill a Scrapjack (46 rounds in Serious Sam Fusion).
  • The XL2 Lasergun is also effective against Scrapjacks, requiring only 38 lasers (23 in Serious Sam Fusion), but note that the XL2, along with its ammo, can only be found in secrets, so use it sparingly.
  • Lone Scrapjacks can be taken out with a single well-placed C-4 explosive or the Sirian Mutilator. Using the Mutilator is not always a good option, as the Scrapjack will pull the player closer to them when using it, leaving the player vulnerable to their melee attack or being swarmed by other enemies, especially Kleer Skeletons and Major Bio-mechanoids.
  • The grenades fired by the Scrapjack in Serious Sam Fusion on Serious difficulty are very dangerous and should be avoided by sidestepping in the opposide direction from which they are fired.
  • With other enemies, Scrapjacks are medium-priority targets. On Serious difficulty, they should be treated as high-priority targets. Their projectiles can be dodged with relative ease but it can prove quite difficult when there are many of them onscreen. At close range, their target priority is higher as it is hard to dodge their projectiles at close range.
  • In Serious Sam Fusion, Scrapjacks have less health, making them easier to kill than before.

Serious Sam 4/Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]

  • As was the case in Serious Sam Fusion, Scrapjacks have 460 HP in these titles, which makes them a lot easier to finish off than before.
  • The player should shoot at their head whenever they get the chance. Strong weapons like the Double Barrel Coach Gun, TCC-2 "Perun" Crossbow, Devastator, or RAPTOR Sniper Rifle can pick off a Scrapjack in just one or two shots to the head.
  • For groups, the FRPCL, MK III Grenade Launcher, XPMR "Burner" Raygun, and SBC Cannon are brilliant weapons against them.
  • If the player has unlocked the homing rocket upgrade for the rocket launcher, it will only take roughly three rockets to kill one. This is also useful for when dealing with groups of Scrapjacks.
  • When riding an enemy and dealing with Scrapjacks, the player is recommended to ride a powerful monster like the Common Aludran Reptiloid, Draconian Burner, or Khnum as their projectiles can quickly kill a Scrapjack. Just three fireballs from a player-controlled Khnum will leave a fully healthy Scrapjack with only 10 HP remaining, allowing it to be more easily finished off by the player's NPC allies.

Trivia[]

  • The Scrapjack looks and behaves like the Mancubus from the Doom series.
    • Also similarly to the Mancubus in Doom II, a Scrapjack's rockets can sometimes clip through walls, hitting the player even if the Scrapjack is on the other side of a solid barrier. This usually happens in areas where the Scrapjack is close to a wall.
  • Scrapjacks are one of the few enemies to tauntingly laugh when the player dies.
  • In the original version of Serious Sam 3, if a Scrapjack kills a player in co-op, depending on which attack was used, an on-screen obituary message reading "[player name] was bombed by a Scrapjack." or "A Scrapjack squashed [player name]." will appear.
  • The Scrapjack's rocket launchers are the same rocket launchers used by the Major Bio-mechanoid. The rockets also share the same model in Serious Sam 3, albeit with different explosion sounds.
  • The player cannot rip the Scrapjack's head off on Tourist difficulty, because their health is too low for them to be stunned.
  • While it's stated that Scrapjacks are built from sewn-together parts of other units, it isn't explicitly specified which those enemy types are. The rocket launchers appear to be the same model as the ones used by the Major Bio-Mechanoid, and as for the creature itself, it has a fleshy, human-like appearance, meaning that it must be made of human Cloned Soldiers and/or Sirian beheaded infantry. The Scrapjack's obesity and imposing size must be either a side effect of the manufacturing process, or completely on purpose (so as to be able to carry the massive rocket launchers that are too large to be wielded for a human-sized creature).
