Fiona Starr[1], better known by her call sign as Hellfire, is a pilot and soldier serving in the Earth Defense Force. She is also a member of the Alien Artifact Acquisition team. Fierce and determined, Hellfire is willing to do whatever it takes to save her planet and her friends at the hands of Mental and his alien armies. She is a well-respected member of the EDF and is often needed for air support on missions or to extract her comrades to a safe and secure location whenever possible.

She is introduced as a minor supporting character in Serious Sam 3: BFE, and returns in Serious Sam 4 with a much larger role than before, serving as a major supporting character.

Biography[]

Hellfire was born on Galileo Station, a space station named after the Italian astromer, that orbits Io, one of the moons of Jupiter. Prior to the Mental War, Hellfire worked as a pilot in the Oort Cloud mining sector, and was described as "a real pain in the ass" by her employers, largely because of her involvement with the Commercial Space Pilots' Union. Hellfire was nevertheless in constant demand due to her superlative flying skills.[2]

One day, Hellfire visited her family at one of the human colonies in the Epsilon Eridani system, but the colonies came under attack by Mental's forces, which initiated the Epsilon Eridani Massacre. After this horrfic incident at the hands of Mental's army, this prompted her to join the Earth Defense Force.[2] Eventually, Hellfire worked up in the ranks to become a pilot and of the most respected people in her field. Her supreme flying and combat skills did not go unnoticed, and she was hand-picked by EDF General Howard Brand to join his Alien Artifact Acquisition squad.[2]

Some of Hellfire's notable engagements while serving in the EDF include the Battle of Beijing, the Battle of the Binary Stars, and the Fall of Arcadia.

Hellfire in helicopter

Hellfire in a helicopter overlooking the EDF convoy.

Hellfire is tasked with escorting an Earth Defense Force convoy on their way to meet up with Father Mikhail in Rome. On the way, they are ambushed by Octanian Raiders and she is separated along with the others.[3] Since the helicopter she is flying lacks any weaponry, she is unable to fend them off, and instead contacts the remnants of the convoy to meet up at the designated extraction point at the Piazza della Repubblica.

Once the area is given the all-clear and it is free of Mental's forces, Hellfire commandeers a city bus to extract Sam, Kenny, Father Mikhail, Jones and Rodriguez, along with Carter, out of the city.[4] She drives them back to headquarters and, upon debriefing, come up with their next objectives; to find a way to escort Father Mikhail back into Rome without being hampered by Lord Achriman's Octanian Raider fleet. Carter suggests using a seismic weapon, the HAARP, to force Mount Vevusius to erupt and ground the Raider fleet. It is approved by General Brand to use the weapon, and the Triple-A team are ordered to make their way to Pompeii to set up the beacons.[5] Once all the beacons are set and primed, Brand orders the HAARP to be activated prematurely, and while they succeed in forcing the volcano to erupt, they lose Jones is lost in the process. The team, save Jones, make it back to the car, and Hellfire takes the rest of the team back to base.[6]

Hellfire in car

Hellfire waits for the team to get in the car.

With their mission in Italy complete, Hellfire pilots a V-22 Osprey with the Triple-A team on board, and they depart to France, where it is revealed from the manuscript from at the Vatican that the Holy Grail is in fact located in Carcassonne, France.[7] On the way to France, some Octanian Raiders fire at the plane, damaging the engines and forcing Hellfire and her team to jump out of the plane and parachute down into the French countryside.[7] Hellfire loses contact with the rest of her team, but she eventually makes it to Carcassonne and into the castle, where she meets up with Sam and the rest of her team. They push further towards the church, and encounter much tougher resistance from Mental's forces, but are able to kill them all.

The team meet up with Hellfire

Sam and the gang reunite with Hellfire.

Eventually, Hellfire and the rest make it to the church, but Lord Achriman suddenly appears and begins taunting Sam, which begins a fight. Sam kills Achriman and the team make it inside the church. Father Mikhail performs a ritual which involves activating hidden mechanisms which reveals the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail.[8] Before the team can get their hands on the Grail, Brand shows up with some of his men and betrays his team in order to serve Mental for his own malicious purposes.

Sam and his friends attempt to intervene and stop Brand, but they are knocked back by a shockwave caused by Brand's new superhuman abilities. Hellfire serves no further purpose for Brand and he has his men order them to dispose of her, Carter and Rodriguez so they can be captured by Harvester Drones to be processed.[8]

Fortunately for Hellfire and the rest of the team, she is able to take control of the Mothership and hijack it, forcing the creature to head all the way to Tunguska, Russia, in order to stop Brand.[9] Hellfire finds a helicopter and takes Carter and Rodriguez to Tunguska to aid in neutralizing the portal. Sam eventually fights his way to the portal, and Hellfire lends him some assistance by dropping down some supplies for him.[10]

Suddenly, Ugh-Zan VI appears through the portal, having been summoned by General Brand. Hellfire drops some crates of C-4, a grappling hook and a parachute for Sam to use to destroy the metal rods attached to Ugh-Zan's body. Once Sam has destroyed all nine rods, Hellfire deploys a mech for Sam to use to fight Ugh-Zan. Sam deals heavy damage to the creature, but it has only been temporarily stunned from the damage it received.[10] Sam, thinking of a plan, uses the Holy Grail and breaks the snake figure around it, causing an unstable reaction within. Sam calls Hellfire for transport, and she gives him a ride in her helicopter so he can get up close to Ugh-Zan. He tosses the Holy Grail inside the creature's mouth and he swallows it. The Grail explodes and kills Ugh-Zan.

Hellfire celebrates the death of the monster, and helps Sam and the team deploy an ICBM warhead to be launched into the portal. She kisses the warhead and stains it with her lipstick as a message to send to Mental. The missile is launched and detonates inside the portal, destroying it. Their mission now complete, Hellfire and the gang take a break and drink beer over a campfire, reminiscing about those they have lost and the good times they had during the mission.[11]

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]

Hellfire does not appear in this game, but she is mentioned by Sam in a loading screen quote.[12]

Serious Sam 3: BFE[]

Hellfire is the pilot requested by the EDF to safely extract Sam from the Great Pyramid after discovering the secret chamber within.[13] Once Sam is onboard, Hellfire informs him that have analayzed the data that Sam found inside the pyramid's Sirian chamber; it is said that there are two powerful generators are located underneath Karnak and Luxor, and they need Sam to turn them on. The two briefly flirt with each other while she takes him to Karnak. She then tells him to be careful before flying off back to headquarters.[14]

Hellfire and Gnaar

A Gnaar sneaks up on Hellfire moments before it kills her.

Later on, after Sam succeeds in contacting HQ again, but is answered by Hellfire instead. She is relieved to hear that he is alive. Hearing signs of a struggle, Sam askes her what's happening over there. She tells him that their base has come under attack by Mental's forces, and Quinn has been killed, while Charlie Team are nowhere to be found. She goes to saying that they won't last much longer, so Hellfire advises Sam that he should stock up on supplies and hide. If anyone survives, they will find him. While she's still talking to him, a Gnaar sneaks up behind her and kills her off-screen, ceasing communications with Sam.[15]

Relationships[]

Sam Stone[]

Hellfire and Sam are good friends, though there may also be a thing between them, as hinted by their teasing and flirting in both Serious Sam 3 and Serious Sam 4. Hellfire also considers the possibility of going out on a real date with Sam after the war is over.[16]

According to Rodriguez, Hellfire and Sam both "did it" on a helicopter while fighting Harpies during the Battle of Beijing, but it's unknown if this is true or a just rumor spread around by the EDF. Hellfire quickly changed the subject and denied there being any Harpes in Beijing, in an attempt to cover having sex with Sam.[17]

Dwayne Rodriguez[]

Rodriguez is one of Hellfire's fellow comrades as well as her friend. She has a slight dislike for Rodriguez and becomes annoyed with him at times, especially when he intrudes in her personal life or asks her questions regarding her relationship with Sam. She usually responds by telling Rodriguez to be quiet.

Daniel Carter[]

Little is known of their relationship, but Hellfire did get annoyed with Carter whenever he began rambling on about conspiracy theories, especially when he associated almost everything with conspiracies, even in general conversations.[11]

Penelope Quinn[]

Quinn oversaw communications in the EDF and between the Triple-A team, and would provide members of the team with useful advice or inform them of their mission objectives. As such, Quinn proved to be a very useful asset for Hellfire and the rest of the team.

During the game credits, Rodriguez notes that he and the gang need more beer, and should have Hellfire call Quinn to bring some more beer for them. Hellfire is quick to defend Quinn, though, remarking to Rodriguez that she is a communications officer and not Rodriguez's personal assisant who has to attend to his every whim. At some point, Quinn arrives with more beer for the Triple-A team, and Hellfire, in a condescending manner, lets off a quip to Quinn that she is her "personal assistant". Quinn does not take too lightly to this remark.[11]

Howard Brand[]

She respected Brand and would obey his orders. Their relationship was severed after Brand became a traitor to humanity and disposed of Hellfire and the rest of her team, seeing as he had no further use for her.

Personality and skills[]

Hellfire is eccentric, optimistic, and full of courage. She is an experienced soldier in the EDF, having seen a lot of combat since she was enlisted. Hellfire does not show fear nor any hesistancy to back away from a fight, and enjoys mowing down hordes of Mental's forces with her signature minigun. Like Sam, she is very skilled in using the weapon.

Hellfire likes to drink whiskey in her spare time. According to Quinn, she describes Hellfire as being "rough on the outside", but once someone gets to know her, she is "made of whiskey and razor blades".[18]

Powers and abilities[]

  • Piloting Skills: Perhaps Hellfire's most noteworthy ability is her impressive piloting skills. She is capable of piloting helicopters and large aircraft without the need or assistance of a co-pilot. Her superior skills regarding aviation did not go unnoticed, and she was hand-picked by General Brand to join the Triple-A team for that very reason.
  • Weapon Proficiency: Hellfire has has been shown to very proficient in the use of firearms, especially with her signature weapon, the minigun.
  • Combat Skills and Experience: Hellfire is an experienced soldier and has sharp wits and reflexes. She has seen a lot of combat prior to the Tunguska Offensive. She is regarded as the second best soldier in the Triple-A team, just after Sam.[19]According to her description, she is cleared to operate almost every single EDF vehicle.[2]

Appearance[]

Hellfire appears as a young Caucasian woman of a slim build with dark brown hair. Her appearance varies to a degree in the games she appears in.

She has been given a new design with a younger look, since the game takes place roughly one year prior to the events of Serious Sam 3. She has spiked short hair that has been shaved at the sides, wears black shades, a shirt or tank top with a camo pattern on it, a leather jacket bearing the Triple-A logo, blue jeans, and brown boots. Behind the scenes[]

  • According to a Croteam employee, in the early version of Serious Sam 3, Fiona's nickname was not "Hellfire", but "Bombshell", thus it was subsequently changed. Interceptor, creators of the Duke Nukem series, has a game of the same name with the main character called Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison, who grew from the idea of the Duke Nukem spin-off game: Mass Destruction. In this context, the Russian-language translation of the nickname of Hellfire resembles that of the original idea.
  • In the original English version of Serious Sam 3, Hellfire is voiced by actress Jennymarie Jemison, while in the official Russian localization she is voiced by Polina Scherbakova.[20]

Trivia[]

  • According to an audio log which involves Hellfire having a conversation with Bill Corwin on his channel, she gained her call sign for her use of incendiary minigun rounds.[21]
  • Of all the pilots in Serious Sam 3, Hellfire is the only one who was not killed by having her helicopter shot down by Mental's Horde.
  • She has requested to be addressed solely by her call sign rather than her actual name.[2]
  • Before she joined the EDF, Hellfire claims she was once a pacifist.[22]
  • She can be selected as a player model in Serious Sam 3: BFE, Serious Sam 4 and Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem, despite her not appearing in the latter game.
  • In the "Sorcerous Samuel" game featured in the level The Package, Hellfire is parodied as a woman named "Hellflame".
