"I'm a lot of things fella' but I am not your lunch!" - Sam Stone
The Sand Whale is an enemy that appears in Serious Sam 3: BFE.
The Sand Whale is a large, worm-like creature that lives in the sands of Egypt. It is unknown if it is part of Mental's forces, as it was brought to Earth as a larva from Gamma Pegasi, probably due to landing pad contamination. It is very territorial and can sense something walking above the sands from miles away. When something gets close to it or its territory, it leaps out of the sand and swallows the thing whole. Its thick scales make it immune to all sorts of weapon known to man, except for precision nuclear strikes.
The Sand Whale's purpose is mostly to keep players from wandering off the level in large, open-ended levels. If the player gets too far from the level, the Sand Whale will start growling and shake the ground. If the player continues to go away from the playing area, the Sand Whale will suddenly appear and eat them. They also sometimes randomly appear, diving in sand and probably devouring some random prey, far in the background.
The player does not fight it, nor does he have the firepower to destroy it, but ultimately you can use it to help you defeat the final boss, as Ugh-Zan IV sometimes walks up to sand, and growls, calling the Sand Whale to fight it. After Sam defeats Ugh-Zan IV and escapes from Earth's destruction, it is presumed that the Sand Whale is also killed by the Earth's destruction.
"For their enormous size and the fact that they filter sand, these animals are commonly known as Sandwhales, while in fact they appear to be worms of polychaeta class. They are suspected to have been accidentally brought to Earth in microscopic larvae state from a desert planet in Gamma Pegasi probably via landing-pad contamination. They appear to feed on minerals and sediments, and don't normally prey on other organisms. But if its territory is disturbed, an aggravated Sandwhale can swallow a heavy assault tank whole. Without chewing. They are so well protected by their thick scales that there are no known ways to kill one short of nuclear weapons. The short stubs along their backs are thought to be a kind of very sensitive cilia, allowing them to feel presence of intruders walking on sand from several miles away."
- In the game's files, there's a "Wound" and Death sound in the Sandwhale's folder.
- Seems to be heavily inspired by the Sandworm from "Dune" and or the Graboids from "Tremors"
- There are certain tactics to avoid the Sandwhale's attack on some levels, which can help speedrunners.
- Some of the Sandwhale's sounds seem to be recycled from the Serious Sam II Kwongo boss stage.
- The Jetpack will overheat instantly if Sam flies far enough into desert to provoke the Sand Whale.
