The Zorg Mercenary is a common enemy that is exclusive to Serious Sam: The Second Encounter and the Xbox, HD and VR renditions of said game. Like the beheaded Sirian infantry in Mental's army, they serve as lightweight troops.

Overview[]

The Zorg Mercenary is a member of a species of bipedal, skinless lizard-like creatures from the planet Beelmez IV. Its people, the Zorgs, managed to create a large interstellar empire.[1] After conquering more planets than they knew what to do with, they decided to take a very long break on a tropical planet in their system. They sunbathed all day from 10am to 4pm.

After the years, the exposure to the ultraviolet radiation from their star caused the Zorgs' skin to fall off. After their disastrous vacation, Mental hired huge numbers of these creatures and imported them from an unknown part of the universe to act as disposable grunts, in an effort to stop Serious Sam.[1]

Appearances[]

Mercenaries are the main lightweight ground troops in The Second Encounter, largely replacing Beheaded Rocketeers. They can be encountered in groups of any size and usually a few Zorg Commanders are found with them. They first appear in The City of the Gods all the way up to The Grand Cathedral, although one can be encountered earlier in Sierra de Chiapas on Serious difficulty after the player exits the catacombs.

Behavior and skills[]

The Mercenary's uses their gun as their main (and only) form of attack. Their firing style is similar to that that of the gun fired by Beheaded Rocketeers, with the differences being the Mercenary's gun firing two blasts in quick succession, with twice as much damage and faster projectile speed compared to the Rocketeer's projectiles. Generally, if one projectile hits a target, the other will almost always as well because of how quickly they are fired. They have no melee attack, even in Serious Sam HD.

Mercenaries will only fire at the player when they are stationary, and they do not use any form of tactics or flanking manuevers.

Tactics[]

  • A Mercenary's projectiles are easy to dodge; the player can either strafe past them or jump over them if they don't have enough room to strafe past them.
  • Lone or small groups of Mercenaries can be easily dispatched with either the 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun, Thompson submachine gun or Schofield .45. Dual-wielded Schofields are even more effective than using a single one against them.
  • Large groups of Mercenaries can easily be cut down with the Thompson, XM214-A Minigun, or the XOP Flamethrower in a matter of seconds.
  • If Mercenaries are clustered together, one rocket or grenade can take out the entire group and significantly harm any Mercenaries near it.
  • Using the flamethrower on Mercenaries will always cause them to flinch when on fire. This is useful in rendering Mercenaries harmless.
  • Mercenaries are a minor nuisance when mixed with other enemies. They should not be a priority target when taking out a group of enemies. With rapid-firing weapons, lining up Zorgs with more dangerous enemies like Kleer Skeletons mean that they go down as well.

Trivia[]

  • In The Second Encounter and Serious Sam Fusion, the player can select the Mercenary as their multiplayer model under the name Skinless Stan.
  • The Zorg Mercenary is called "Grunt" in the game and editor files.
  • The Zorg Mercenary was given new hurt and death sounds in Serious Sam HD.
